Jonah 2:8

They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy.

Observe means to keep, guard, watch for, wait for, as the righteous observe the Sabbath.

Lying vanities are a breath, a vapor, a puff of smoke. They are false gods, god-frauds, idols that men look up to, bowing before them. And these idols steal the only thing that would save the deceived, the tender mercies of God.

The deceived man who waits and watches for the time he can guard from others a puff of smoke, a vapor trail of a god-fraud, gives up and turns his back on his own salvation.

Jonah 2:9

But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the Lord.
